Donna Ritchie and her husband Shawn want to ensure no kid sleeps on the floor in their town.

"We've always had a heart for kids," Ritchie said.

Ritchie is president of the Rochester chapter of Sleep in Heavenly Peace, a non-profit that builds, assembles, and delivers top-notch bunk beds to children.

The Rochester chapter says they've delivered 445 beds to "children who don't have a bed and regularly sleep on the floor, a couch or an air mattress."

Ritchie's family delivered their first bed on Christmas Eve 2019, and hopes to provide their 500th bed by Christmas.

"It's a family tradition," Ritchie said.

48.2% of all children in Rochester live in poverty, according to the U.S Census Bureau. Ritchie believes that statistic proves a tremendous need for beds to guarantee children quality sleep.

"We currently have a waitlist of over 150 kids," Ritchie said. "We see kids sleeping on pallets, chairs, or piles of laundry."

In September, Sleep in Heavenly Peace hosted "Bunks Across America," an event that saw over a hundred volunteers build sixty beds for local children.

The organization plans to host a similar event on Oct. 15 to fulfill its holiday goals.
