May 24—A 29-year-old Macon man remains jailed in the Baldwin County Law Enforcement Center after he was arrested at gunpoint by local lawmen shortly after breaking a display window at JC Grant Co., a Milledgeville jewelry store, on Saturday night.
Authorities said the suspect stole a diamond pendant gold necklace and ran off after shattering a window display case with a metal pole. The necklace was valued at $2,100.
The crime happened shortly before 10 p.m. It was all captured by a video surveillance camera.
Milledgeville Police Department Maj. Linc Boyer identified the suspect as Seth Cory Walsh, of the 100 block of Walnut Street, Macon.
Walsh was charged with one count of felony smash and grab burglary, jail records show.
The suspect was reportedly seen by three women breaking into the jewelry display window. The women reported the crime to Chris Lobdell, who works at the Reel Grill on South Wayne Street, according to an incident report filed by Milledgeville Police Officer William "Jake" Brooks.
"Lobdell ... came outside and saw the male fleeing toward Hancock Street, so he began to chase him," Brooks said in his report. "Lobdell said he chased the male to the parking lot where he was later taken into custody."
Brooks said before the suspect was arrested, he received information from a dispatcher that the suspect had been spotted near the rear parking lot of Ned Kelly's restaurant, located at 119 S. Wayne St.
Brooks said he, along with Baldwin County Sheriff's Office Deputy Sgt. Jerome Roberts, responded to the area. The lawmen soon spotted a man fitting the description of the suspect hiding behind a vehicle.
"The male was given commands to show his hands, which he did before lying facedown on the ground," Brooks said. "The male was then detained in double-locked handcuffs, and identified as Seth Walsh."
The police officer said while he was gathering Walsh's belongings off the ground, he discovered the diamond pendant gold necklace. The necklace appeared to be tied into one of the plastic bags the suspect had been carrying with him.
"The necklace was found to have a tag from JC Grant and was valued at $2,100," Brooks said in his report.
Brooks said Walsh was placed into the rear of Robert's patrol vehicle.
Brooks said the suspect was advised of his Miranda rights and he agreed to talk with him and the deputy without a lawyer present to represent him.
"He admitted to breaking into the display case and taking the necklace," Brooks said.
The police chief said he wasn't aware that children and teachers were desperately calling 911 for help because he didn't have his radio with him.
