In “Send in the Marines for a Modernization” (op-ed May 31), Reps. Seth Moulton and Mike Gallagher cite the war in Ukraine to draw conclusions about the value of technology in future wars, and then use those conclusions to endorse the Marine Corps’ ambitious and risky plan to fight a very different type of war in a very different theater.

The lawmakers praise Marine Corps efforts to “modernize,” but the mere process of modernization doesn’t necessarily equate to improvement. The nature of the modernization matters, and the Marine Corps is stepping off smartly but in the wrong direction.
