To the editor: Although Williamstown faces huge challenges to racial justice and police reform, the town has not had a full-time mayor for more than seven months. We call on the selection committee to select North Adams Mayor Tom Bernard as the interim town manager.

We believe that Mayor Bernard is the unicorn that Jane Patton, a member of the selection committee, hopes for when he asks candidates to provide experience in administrative and racial justice. Mayor Bernard hired a police chief, which is one of the main tasks of the next mayor. In addition, Mayor Bernard said in his city speech: "North Adams has also participated in a belated national liquidation of the legacy of racism and white supremacy."

Although in the 17 months after George Floyd's murder, he showed no tangible results, he listened carefully and avoided many of the pitfalls experienced by neighboring towns, including ourselves.

We are committed to the necessary structural changes to ensure that the future of this town includes safety, dignity, and collective responsibility to each other. We believe that Mayor Bernard will adhere to Articles 36 and 37, centering on those who are and have been marginalized in our community. We know that Williamstown is no exception in the face of white supremacy and structural racism.

We firmly believe that the adherence to transparency and accountability of leadership positions is a positive development, showing respect for every resident and visitor, regardless of their life experience. Mayor Bernard’s recent accusations against Representative Barrett should not affect this decision. If we allow it to adversely affect the decision, what we are doing is what Mayor Bernard is trying to prevent through public accusations. Mayor Bernard has not been accused of any wrongdoing at the Mohawk Theater, and he should not be seen as doing something wrong.

We hope that residents and leaders will carefully examine the traces of our town policy and charter, jointly imagine creative improvements, and open up Williamstown and its many gifts to others in the coming decades. Mayor Bernard has a personal and multi-generational connection with Williams College, which will enable him to play a role in some of the larger issues facing the town.

It is for these reasons that we enthusiastically support Mayor Tom Bernard's candidacy for the interim mayor of Williamstown.
