Once upon a time, the northern suburbs of Worcestershire was the furniture manufacturing center of New England, but almost all of these manufacturers no longer exist.

The family-owned Salom furniture survived and thrived. The business started 40 years ago.

"My father started making coffee tables and dining tables in his father's basement as a hobby," Peter Salum said.

When Saloom's started building tiled tabletops in the early 1990s, this hobby quickly became a family business.

Now, the company makes custom-designed rooms in the 80,000-square-foot factory space in Winchendon. Saloom believes that the continued success of the business is based on the reputation of building quality heirloom works.

"We never compromise on quality," he said. "We have never changed any accelerated production that would reduce quality. We always focus on the best materials."

Saloom has a team of 50 employees and craftsmen, and he says this will be the key to maintaining this reputation in the future.

Their work can be found in 350 retailers across the country, including local distributors such as Jordan's and Circle Furniture.
