Microsoft has created a brand new digital experience for users to explore ancient Olympia, Greece's original Olympic Games site. The project includes 3D models of 27 ancient buildings, such as the original Olympic Stadium, the Temple of Zeus and Hera, and the studio of the Greek sculptor Phidias.

This experience is called "Ancient Olympia: Common Ground" and it was produced in cooperation with the Greek Ministry of Culture and Sports. Iconem, a startup that specializes in digitally copying historical sites, also collaborated with Microsoft to create a 3D project, which includes a description of how ancient Olympia has changed over time.

Iconem used ground cameras and drones to take hundreds of thousands of photos in modern Olympia. Microsoft artificial intelligence then changed the image based on the research of archaeologists to create a 3D model similar to its ancient form.

Brad Smith, President and Vice Chairman of Microsoft, said: "The digital protection of ancient Olympia is an amazing achievement in cultural heritage. It combines humanity and cutting-edge technology for the benefit of the world, and gives future generations new ways to explore our past. .", said in a statement.

Users can explore the digital experience through their web pages, mobile apps, or visit the Olympic Museum in Athens, Greece in person. The exhibition in the museum allows guests to wear Microsoft HoloLens headsets and take a virtual tour of ancient Olympia.
