In the third quarter, net taxable accommodation sales, accommodation sales tax, and the city’s "bed tax" accommodation tax more than doubled compared with the same period last year.

The bed tax calculated based on the actual rented room has almost reached the level before the pandemic.

The July-September city report showed that taxable net sales of accommodation this year were US$25.1 million, compared with US$10.2 million in the same period last year. Accommodation sales tax rose from approximately US$388,000 to US$916,000.

The bed tax is a 3% tax; 70% of it is used to promote the city’s business travel and leisure tourism in Visit Fort Collins, and the rest is used to fund art and cultural grants in the city.

Accommodation tax revenue for the quarter increased from approximately US$280,000 in the same period last year to US$635,000. The bed tax revenue for the third quarter of 2019 was approximately US$680,000.

"We see that the accommodation is back," said Cynthia Eichler, President and CEO of Visit Fort Collins. She said the rebound in downtown hotels and Colorado State University football was particularly strong.

"So far, leisure is still the strongest," Eichler said. With the increase in remote work, the demand for travel has decreased, hindering business travel. "We hope to have more business travel in 2022."

She said that the fourth quarter performance will continue to recover, "but not at the same speed."

A new tax of 3% will also be levied in the fourth quarter to fund the tourism improvement zone approved in August of Fort Collins.

The intergovernmental agreement needs to take effect before the TID tax is officially collected, but the hotel “collects it in October in November,” said Clay Frickey, the redevelopment project manager.

The new fees are expected to raise approximately US$800,000 per year to promote the city as a tourist destination.
